South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has launched a G20 experts taskforce to examine global wealth inequality and its impact on growth, poverty and multilateralism.

Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz, a University Professor at Columbia University and an advisory board member of the Center for Political Economy, will chair the six-member panel expected to present its findings to G20 leaders due to convene in Johannesburg in November.

The taskforce is the first initiative of its kind for the G20, according to an Aug. 28 Reuters story.

Stiglitz said the taskforce's goal is to turn public frustration over inequality into practical policy proposals for G20 leaders.

"Inequality was always a choice,” he said, “and G20 nations have the power to choose a different path on a range of economic and social policies.”
