Claudio Lomnitz’s book, "Sovereignty and Extortion: A New State Form in Mexico," was reviewed in the Latin American Review of Books in the Aug. 29, 2024, article "Rule of Lore."

Reviewer Gavin O'Toole writes that "The esteemed anthropologist steps outside the confines of his discipline to present a series of essays—originally delivered in 2021 as a cycle of lectures at El Colegio Nacional—in which he challenges assumptions about statehood and sovereignty with striking originality."

Lomnitz is the Campbell Family Professor and chair of the Anthropology Department and one or 13 recipients in 2024 of the Center for Political Economy's Faculty Grants. The grant supports a workshop series for The Social Study of Forced Disappearance Laba collaboration between Columbia and Barnard faculty, the Columbia library, and multiple Mexican institutions.
