In September 2024, the Fed lowered interest rates for the first time in four years, which were preceded by years of highly expansive monetary policy that preceded the Great Financial Crisis but were fueled by it as well as by the response to the Covid pandemic that followed. In this brainstorming workshop we will explore how loose central bank policy has shaped financial markets and what implications this might have for the future. By assembling a group of experts who have thought and written about these issues we hope to shed some new light on these matters.
The format of this workshop is a brainstorming session. We will ask our invited speakers to share their thoughts on the theme of the workshop in a brief oral statement (5-10 min) up front and then open the floor for discussion. We hope that the discussion will help us at the Center for Political Economy to identify some themes that will inform research projects as well as future events, including, most importantly, a workshop with regulators and policy makers in the spring term for which we hope you will join us again.
