Mazo proposes that one novel way to measure the growth of solidarity or class consciousness is through analyzing the labor output of digital media journalists. This workforce presents a unique opportunity to study a sector that went from zero unionized workers in 2014 to thousands by 2022. She hypothesizes that after organizing a union with their coworkers, workers develop a strong feeling of solidarity not just with each other but with the working class as a whole, and that this can be measured amongst journalists who unionize through interviews and through quantitative analysis of the news articles they produced before and after they unionized. The anticipated impact of this project, specifically with regard to the growth of the U.S. labor movement, is to build an understanding of how class conflict, solidarity, and news production intertwine.
